Biography
Joshua Dunaief, MD, PhD, received his BA magna cum laude in Biology from Harvard (1987), MD/PhD from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons (1996), completed ophthalmology residency at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins in 2000, and medical retina fellowship at Scheie Eye Institute, University of Pennsylvania in 2004. He has remained on the faculty at UPenn, and is the Adele Niessen Professor of Ophthalmology as of 2016. He has cared for patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) since 2000, and his lab focuses on developing new understanding and treatment of AMD.
Dr. Dunaief’s lab has published over 65 peer-reviewed articles related to AMD, and he has NIH funding to study mechanisms of retinal iron transport and the role of iron toxicity in AMD. He was given the Cogan Award by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology in 2006, and has served as a moderator and speaker at several recent international meetings on AMD.
