Biography

Dr. Maximilian Pfau is an ophthalmologist at the University Eye Hospital, Basel, Switzerland, specializing in diagnosing and treating inherited retinal degenerative diseases (IRDs) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Dr. Pfau heads the Visual Neurophysiology Platform at the University Eye Hospital, where his research group investigates the disease mechanisms of degenerative retinal diseases using a comprehensive range of noninvasive visual function tests and state-of-the-art high-resolution retinal imaging techniques.

Dr. Pfau earned his medical degree from Heidelberg University, Germany. He conducted basic science biochemistry research in Prof. Söllner’s lab. Following graduation and a fellowship at the Doheny Eye Institute, UCLA, he entered the ophthalmology residency program at the University of Bonn, Germany (chair: Prof. F.G. Holz). Subsequently, Dr. Pfau pursued postdoctoral training in AI-based image analysis in Prof. Rubin’s lab at Stanford University, and in psychophysics and electrophysiology in Dr. Jeffrey’s lab at the National Eye Institute.
