BrightFocus’ global partner in Germany is Alzheimer Forschung Initiative e.V. (AFI). The main objectives of AFI are to fund promising Alzheimer’s disease research and to educate the public about the disease. AFI is a charitable organization supported primarily by private donations. Its own foundation is called Stiftung Alzheimer Initiative (SAI) and was established in 2009. SAI provides the opportunity for private long-term capital investments in support of AFI’s goals. Since its founding in 1995, AFI has been headed by CEO Oda Şanel and now employs 10 staff members in its headquarters in Düsseldorf. AFI is the biggest independent private nonprofit funder of Alzheimer’s disease research in Germany.

BrightFocus’ global partner in Belgium, Stichting Alzheimer Onderzoek (SAO) / Fondation Recherche Alzheimer (FRA), is a nonprofit entity founded in 1995 and operating since 1998. It relies upon donations and legacies from the general public to achieve its goals. The foundation’s primary purpose is to support basic, clinical, and diagnostic scientific research regarding the causes and possible treatments of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. SAO/FMRA also provides the public with information about this brain disease.

Since 1998 SAO/FRA, which is the largest private funder of Alzheimer’s research in Belgium, has financed 128 scientific projects for a total sum of 10.400.000 Euros.
The organization’s president and managing director is Wilfried Nys and Herman Van Rompuy, former president of the European Union, serves as its spokesperson.

The BrightFocus global partner in the Netherlands is Alzheimer Nederland. This Dutch nonprofit organization conducts scientific research into the causes of and treatments for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Alzheimer Nederland also provides information and support to the general public concerning this brain disease. Alzheimer Nederland was founded in 1993 and is entirely dependent on donations from individuals and companies.

Fondation Vaincre Alzheimer was founded by BrightFocus in April 2005. With BrightFocus’ support, Fondation Vaincre Alzheimer became established in France, raising money to fund French public and not-for-profit research programs.

Three brochures created by BrightFocus were translated and adapted into French: Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease; Staying Safe: Wandering & the Alzheimer’s Patient; and Care for the Caregiver: Managing Stress. These brochures gave Fondation Vancre Alzheimer the impetus to create new brochures and enrich its educational material. The demand for these free brochures increases every month.

Geraldine Drexel De Buchy has served as the executive director since December 2007. She studied French literature, English, and German at La Sorbonne in Paris. After teaching literature for several years, she worked in film production and development. Passionate about the nonprofit field, she enthusiastically accepted the position as executive director in 2007, determined to help develop the organization and its research and education programs in France.

BrightFocus collaborates with the American Glaucoma Society, which is comprised of glaucoma specialists dedicated to sharing clinical and scientific information for the benefit of patients, colleagues, fellows and residents, to produce the BrightFocus Glaucoma Chats series.

BrightFocus Foundation is a member of Leaders Engaged on Alzheimer’s Disease (LEAD), a diverse and growing national coalition of 67 organizations including patient advocacy and voluntary health non-profits, philanthropies and foundations, trade and professional associations, academic research and clinical institutions, home and residential care providers, and biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.

The coalition works collaboratively to focus the nation’s strategic attention on Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders and to accelerate transformational progress in care and support, detection and diagnosis, and research leading to prevention, effective treatment, and eventual cure.

BrightFocus Foundation has entered into a partnership with BioMed Central’s open access journal, Molecular Neurodegeneration (MN), in which MN is now the official journal of BrightFocus. The open access publishing model provides articles for free to the general public as well as scientists, clinicians and other healthcare practitioners.

Molecular Neurodegeneration publishes peer-reviewed, original scientific research on the causes of neurodegenerative diseases, like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s, and on the pre-clinical testing of potential therapies for these devastating diseases.

BrightFocus is an Ambassador Partner of the National Eye Health Education Program (NEHEP) Partnership housed at the National Eye Institute, a national network of more than 60 public and private organizations committed to eye health education. NEHEP works closely with health professionals and health educators to create resources and tools used to raise awareness in communities around the country.

BrightFocus Foundation is a member of ReACT, an employer-focused coalition dedicated to addressing the challenges faced by employee caregivers and reducing the impact on the companies that employ them. ReACT represents nearly 1 million employees through its membership of more than 30 companies and nonprofit organizations.
