Summary
Dr. Bhattacharya believes there are intrinsic differences in protein composition in the optic nerve that put the individuals at increased risk to glaucoma and that protein modifications leads to progression of the disease. The specific aim of this project is to determine the differential protein profile between a normal and glaucomatous optic nerve and to confirm the identity of unique glaucoma-associated proteins. The identification of proteins and protein modifications may serve as markers for individuals predisposed to an increased risk of developing glaucoma. Such information will provide insight into the causes of glaucoma and lead to identification of possible drug targets for glaucoma therapy.
