What We Do
BrightFocus Foundation funds exceptional scientific research worldwide to defeat Alzheimer’s disease, macular degeneration, and glaucoma and provides expert information to empower individuals and families.
Our Work
Fund Innovative Science
Our Robust Research Program
We provide initial funding for highly innovative, experimental ideas with the most significant promise to change a disease’s trajectory. Most of our grants support early-stage research, ensuring fresh perspectives and novel discoveries that fuel the field, delivering an increased return on research investment over time. BrightFocus grants undergo rigorous evaluation by the world’s top scientists and clinicians who serve on our scientific review committees.
Invest in Scientists
Paving the Future of the Field
BrightFocus educates, trains, and supports the next generation of brain and vision scientists. Taught by experts in the field, our signature Fast Track workshops and global travel fellowships have accelerated the careers and transformative ideas of thousands of early-career scientists worldwide.
Inform the Public
Sharing Public Resources and Educating Communities
BrightFocus empowers individuals and families with trusted information on research findings, healthy living, risk reduction, treatments, and living with diseases of mind and sight. We offer expert-vetted resources, community events, virtual programming, partnerships, and entertainment connecting the public to researchers, doctors, and expert information in multilingual formats.
Over 50 Years of Bold Research
Since our founding more than 50 years ago, we’ve funded the boldest research and “what-if” ideas to get us closer to cures, resulting in the novel treatments and diagnostic tools in use today. We also raise awareness and empower people with these diseases and their loved ones by sharing expert resources and information.
Our Commitment to Health Equity
Every population is impacted by Alzheimer’s, macular degeneration, and glaucoma, but they are not impacted equally. Health equity starts in the lab, and disparities are a public health problem that must be solved to prevent, treat, and cure mind and sight diseases. Central to the vision and mission of BrightFocus Foundation is a drive to fund the most promising scientific research so that we can all live a longer and more rewarding life.
BrightFocus is committed to:
- Funding the most promising and innovative research that approaches the diseases from diverse angles to have the best chance of defeating them for good.
- Growing community to reflect better and support every person impacted by mind and sight diseases.
- Supporting and educating scientists from all backgrounds to foster creativity and innovation in addressing complex scientific challenges. We strongly encourage applications from individuals who are from groups underrepresented in the field to apply for our grants. Nearly 45% of our funded researchers across 25 countries are women and from a non-white racial background.
- Reflecting the broad community we serve by hiring with a mindset of inclusivity. We believe diverse perspectives and representation amongst our staff and leadership are essential to better understanding and serving everyone.
- Increasing awareness across every community about mind and sight diseases, with an emphasis on under-resourced communities where there is a significant distrust in healthcare professionals and a lack of understanding about the diseases and the importance of taking them more seriously.
- Growing our strategic diversity, equity, and inclusion partnerships to better educate and engage with underserved communities in a meaningful way that provides value to these communities. We believe that change starts from within, and that success occurs when community ambassadors build relationships and trust as agents of change over time.
- Listening to and making changes in our initiatives to reflect better the voices of the people we serve.
- Ensuring our informational programs and materials meet the highest ADA standards for accessibility and low vision possible.
- Increasing our free multilingual resources.
